Where are you deployed, Mr diplomat?

The appointment of former Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, Lt. Gen. Masaneh Kinteh, is causing confusion in Banjul, with people guessing which diplomatic mission he has been assigned to and in what capacity. Kibaaro News was reliably informed yesterday, 8 August 2012, that Mr Kinteh has been appointed the new Gambian ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Tunisia.

However, that came against the backdrop of reports earlier published on the pro-government newspaper, Daily Observer on 2 August 2012, stating that Mr Kinteh had been appointed the new deputy Chief of Mission to the Gambia’s diplomatic mission in Havana, Cuba. But since the publication of that report, Mr Kinteh and family remained in Banjul, which raised eyebrows on the veracity of the pro-government paper’s report.

Our source confirmed that the pro-government mouthpiece had rushed to press with their story before their boss, President Jammeh, made up his mind about Mr Kinteh’s appointment.

An insider at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Mr Kinteh’s appointment to the ambassadorial post in Tunisia. He described earlier reports of Mr Kinteh’s appointment to Cuba as premature, as his appointment was not finalised until last week. He said that Mr Kinteh received his appointment letter last week confirming his appointment to lead the Gambia’s diplomatic mission in Tunisia.

Sources close to Mr Kinteh’s wife’s family in Brikama expressed caution about the news. They stated that they will believe in the news once their son-in-law and family depart the country. Until then they remain cautious about any news being pedaled.

They have however confirmed their knowledge of their son-in-law’s appointment to the North African country, and that their daughter, Mr Kinteh’s wife, Fatou Bintou Dahaba-Kinteh, is preparing for their departure to Tunisia.

Masaneh Kinteh was born on 13th August 1968 in Sankwia village, Jarra West, Lower River Region of the Gambia. He served as a school teacher from 1988 to 1990. He joined the Gambia Armed Forces on 15 March 1991. Thereafter he rose through various ranks before becoming the Chief of the Defence Staff in 2009. He was discharged from the Gambia Armed Forces on Friday, 6th July 2012 by President Yahya Jammeh, on the pretext that he had been redeployed to the foreign services. Thereafter he had been unemployed untill his recent appointment, which remains to be seen.
