The Committee for the Restoration of Democracy in the Gambia (CORDEG) has confirmed on 21 February 2014 at its first press conference that they are neither a “government in waiting” nor a “political party”.
Instead the organisation under the able leadership of Dr. Abdoulie Saine, a Political Science Professor at Miami University in Ohio, intends to coordinate the political activities of the Gambia Diaspora.
To achieve this goal the CORDEG executive intends to engage all Gambian Diaspora civil society groups and individual Gambians to actively participate in the political process. As Dr. Saine rightly puts it, it’s a crime to forget the Gambia, as one owes much obligation to his/her country of birth and upbringing.
CORDEG will also create an avenue or website were Gambians will be afforded the opportunity to discern credible information about the happenings of the Gambia. Dr. Saine promised to create a library of information about the Gambia, in order to be able to discern the wheat from the chaff.
CORDEG also intends to consider possible legal actions against President Jammeh’s regime for atrocities committed against the Gambian people.
The CORDEG Vice Chairperson Mrs Sigga Jagne chaired the press conference, which was also attended by the group’s Secretary General Mr Abdoulie Jobe.
CORDEG is the brainchild of the Raleigh Conference, which took place in May 2013. The CORDEG executive was elected on 8 February 2014 comprising of the following members and portfolios, which were formally agreed and endorsed by the Raleigh Steering Committee.
