Chief Sheriff Ajay Janneh

Gambian president Yahya Jammeh has fired the chief of Kombo South. Interestingly, Chief Alhagie Mustapha Touray has been replaced by the former area chief Sheriff Ajay Janneh.

Chief Touray, who replaced his current successor, was appointed to the position in December 2011. This followed the firing of Sheriff Ajay Janneh who has been hired and fired by President Jammeh on four occasions.

Both Sheriff Ajay and Alhagie Mustapha hail from Gunjur.

Even after his last dismissal in 2011, Ajay and President Jammeh reportedly remained good friends. He remains the custodian of Gambian leader’s numerous farms in Batokunku, Gunjur, Kartong and Siffoe. Informed sources said Ajay had received a lot of material handouts, including a 10-wheeler tuck.

Chief Touray was seen as nothing other than a figure head of the chieftaincy, as Jammeh consults Ajay on matters relating to the district..

Until his appointment as chief of Kombo South, Alhajie Mustapha Touray was working as a veterinary office at the International Trypanotolerance Centre (ITC) in Sololo, near Bansang. No reasons were given for his sacking. And it is not clear whether it has anything to do with the recently concluded UDP youth conference in Tanje, Kombo South.
